You are the best student in your department during your school days but now you have been looking up to big firm to employ you over five (5) years. That’s what happened to many who love to work in a big firm believing they have what it takes to grab any opportunity that comes around.
One of the biggest opportunity i failed to grab comes during the time i worked in a cyber cafe, a man worked into the center, after browsing and enjoy the service I rendered, he then ask me if I can train their community youth programming and they will pay me a total sum of NGN1.2m for the two (2) month. The program was set up by the community to empower their youth and he would love it if I can take them on the course because of the way I attend to him while he was browsing. But poor me, prior to that time i had no knowledge in programming, so how can i be confident to grab such opportunity. I can find a programmer for you did not work out as the man is only interested in me not other person.
Don’t wait for big opportunity while doing nothing, upgrade yourself, improve in your skills, because opportunity might comes in an upgraded version of your current skills. While you are a Bsc holder but an opportunity comes like this “Bsc holder with skills in this and that”. One woman work into my office one day and ask me “How much would you take to teach me Microsoft word, Microsoft power point and Microsoft access in 24 hours”, one of her church member had promise to give her work of NGN120,000 monthly if she has vast knowledge in the above listed applications. I thought for a while, what the hell are you doing since all this years and to cap it, the woman is a master degree holder. Opportunity comes like a breeze and it takes only the required skills and certification to grab it.
So while waiting, build yourself up, learn basic things. Don’t just relax because you are a Bsc holder or HND holder or a master degree holder, upgrade the version of your current skills or certification who knows in which form the opportunity might come around.
